So far this New Year hasn’t been so craftfully successful. I’ve had a series of bag failures that after a week of trying, I finally gave up. Last night after throwing the 8th bag on the pile, I decided to try the next thing on my list: a car organizer.
What we have had up until now is a catch all bag that holds everything, including the car trash which includes countless wrappers from post-soccer-game sweets. (Side note: I just don’t get why my boy’s soccer games have to be followed by fat and sugar. I’m all for a healthy snack, but an ice-cream cone? Sigh.) So when I hear this: “Mommy!!! Can I have a Kleenex please?” I have to dig through the mound of germy hand wipes and old snack wrappers to get to the Kleenex. And because the bag is such a mess, stuff gets piled onto the passenger seat in the car. Come Sunday, hubby drives and I climb into the passenger seat, put all the extraneous stuff on my lap and start sorting through it on our way to church. Half of it goes into the hold-everything disaster bag and the rest of it goes onto the floor. Behold the bag that wasn’t working:

It has 2 compartments: one for trash and one for wipes and Kleenex. On one long side is a pocket to hold my JoAnn’s and Michael’s coupons. I’ve never made a divider in the middle of a bag like that so that was fun. I learned something new and made something functional. Perhaps it will turn out to be a craftilicious year after all.
There’s certainly room for improvement, but for now, it’ll do the trick.

What a great idea on the organizer. You are just so freaking talented and it makes me jealous!
And on your side note….I do not understand why the kids need a snack at all after a game. A drink I understand, but food??? It just seems silly to me. My kids usually never ate the snack anyway, they were too hot and sweaty and just wanted the drink.
I absolutely love it! I need something like this in my car. I’m always sticking the trash in odd places. It would have to go in the back of the car though, since there is no room in the front, unfortunately.
I’ve been thinking I need something like a fabric basket for the van myself lately. Great idea! and it looks great too. I hope you do make a pattern.
You really don’t want me to share the state of the inside of my car. Really, you don’t. Yours looks palatial. Maybe I need an organizer. But face it, even a plastic bag would be a revolution.
I love this car catchall that you made and totally love the pocket in the front. Very clever. Did you use timtex with that box to keep it upright? I also agree with the other gals. This needs to be made into a pattern to sell.

Very nice! We have the same minivan and I have a plastic basket that sits in that spot for the same reason. Might I suggest a little spot for a pen and pad of paper? And a pocket to put a charging cell phone in since the ONLY plug in is on the floor down there by the basket?
I will be first in line to buy this pattern when you/if you put it out there. It’s darling.
The organizer has the most important feature of all… coupon holder! And I hate dividers… even though they are very useful. I’d rather glue two bags together than make a divider. I’m not sure where the resentment for dividers come from exactly, haha!
Love it! It’s one of my goals this year to better organize my car, so I’ll keep this project in the back of my mind. My brain is confounded as to how to attach the divider though?
What a fantastic idea. I have 4 kids and the amount of junk you can collect in the car is amazing. Are you going to do a pattern for it? I would really find it useful, was it difficult?
this is exactly what I need for my car! my boyfriend once told me that no one would ever try to steal my car just for the work to select what was worth stealing…

Yep, I think everyone here agrees. It is wonderful! I like the coupon spot. I think that I’d have to have a trash area about 10 times as large…we seem to have lots and lots of trash. It baffles my husband, and honestly I don’t know where half of it comes from either. My car has a little klenex holder, but I could use the other side to hold wipes and diapers. great great great!
