Car Organizer

So far this New Year hasn’t been so craftfully successful.  I’ve had a series of bag failures that after a week of trying, I finally gave up.  Last night after throwing the 8th bag on the pile, I decided to try the next thing on my list:  a car organizer.

What we have had up until now is a catch all bag that holds everything, including the car trash which includes countless wrappers from post-soccer-game sweets.  (Side note:  I just don’t get why my boy’s soccer games have to be followed by fat and sugar.  I’m all for a healthy snack, but an ice-cream cone?  Sigh.)  So when I hear this:  “Mommy!!!  Can I have a Kleenex please?”  I have to dig through the mound of germy hand wipes and old snack wrappers to get to the Kleenex.  And because the bag is such a mess, stuff gets piled onto the passenger seat in the car.  Come Sunday, hubby drives and I climb into the passenger seat, put all the extraneous stuff on my lap and start sorting through it on our way to church.  Half of it goes into the hold-everything disaster bag and the rest of it goes onto the floor.  Behold the bag that wasn’t working:

And the replacement:

car organizer

It has 2 compartments:  one for trash and one for wipes and Kleenex.  On one long side is a pocket to hold my JoAnn’s and Michael’s coupons.  I’ve never made a divider in the middle of a bag like that so that was fun.  I learned something new and made something functional.  Perhaps it will turn out to be a craftilicious year after all.

in action

There’s certainly room for improvement, but for now, it’ll do the trick.

The pattern for the Car Organizer is now available here.

I’m almost speechless, well done. Our box of tissues was always getting squished. This is perfect!

Super job and a great idea!

  3. 4 Tamara January 8, 2008 at 12:13 pm

    That’s FANTASTIC!!! How practical.

  4. 5 Sheree January 8, 2008 at 12:15 pm

That is so cute!!! You should make it a pattern- I’d love to make one for my funbus, too.

  5. 6 Karyn January 8, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Ohhh…I’m thinking you need to make up a pattern for that one and sell it Linda! I love it!

  6. 7 Carrie January 8, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Wow! That looks great! I wonder if I can make on that is teardrop shaped (so it fits in my car..)

  7. 8 monique January 8, 2008 at 12:48 pm

Nice, I would live to know how u did it!
    It looks awsome………………………..

  8. 10 Chara Michele January 8, 2008 at 1:36 pm

Love the car organizer! I am totally curious how you put the divider in? Would you be willing to share? 🙂

  9. 11 Marla January 8, 2008 at 1:42 pm

What a great idea on the organizer. You are just so freaking talented and it makes me jealous!

And on your side note….I do not understand why the kids need a snack at all after a game. A drink I understand, but food??? It just seems silly to me. My kids usually never ate the snack anyway, they were too hot and sweaty and just wanted the drink.

  10. 12 Tammy January 8, 2008 at 1:46 pm

I absolutely love it! I need something like this in my car. I’m always sticking the trash in odd places. It would have to go in the back of the car though, since there is no room in the front, unfortunately.

  11. 13 erika January 8, 2008 at 2:37 pm

I’ve been thinking I need something like a fabric basket for the van myself lately. Great idea! and it looks great too. I hope you do make a pattern.

  12. 14 Ali January 8, 2008 at 3:13 pm

You really don’t want me to share the state of the inside of my car. Really, you don’t. Yours looks palatial. Maybe I need an organizer. But face it, even a plastic bag would be a revolution.

  13. 15 Cheryl January 8, 2008 at 3:37 pm

I love this car catchall that you made and totally love the pocket in the front. Very clever. Did you use timtex with that box to keep it upright? I also agree with the other gals. This needs to be made into a pattern to sell.

  14. 16 Stacy January 8, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Looks like a perfect organizer. Great job!

  15. 17 fromthenarrows January 8, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Your car looks like mine. Is it an odyssey? And great bag. I need one.

  16. 18 southerngirlmusings January 8, 2008 at 4:24 pm

That is a great organizer and love the divider. 🙂

  17. 19 Cindi January 8, 2008 at 5:33 pm

  18. 20 kathie Holland January 8, 2008 at 5:35 pm

  19. 21 Sue B January 8, 2008 at 5:53 pm

  20. 22 tinkerverve January 8, 2008 at 6:42 pm

I’m just in awe of how clean your van is. 😉 It must be the magical presence of your new organizer.

  21. 24 Elizabeth K January 8, 2008 at 9:46 pm

wow, that is excellent. Also, very clean car!

  22. 25 Stacy T January 8, 2008 at 11:49 pm

What a great idea!! 😀 And perfect for that little spot in between the dash/console! 😀

  23. 26 Kim W January 9, 2008 at 1:24 am

I LOVE that. I need something like that for my car too!

  24. 27 seemownay January 9, 2008 at 3:12 am

What a great idea. Looks perfect to me.

  25. 28 Beth January 9, 2008 at 9:19 am

That’s terrific! I especially love the slot for the coupons. I usually have coupon flyers all over my car. 🙂 I hope you’re able to get back to your bag design because I’m intrigued and want to see how it turns out. 🙂

  26. 29 karen January 9, 2008 at 11:31 am

Very nice! We have the same minivan and I have a plastic basket that sits in that spot for the same reason. Might I suggest a little spot for a pen and pad of paper? And a pocket to put a charging cell phone in since the ONLY plug in is on the floor down there by the basket?

I will be first in line to buy this pattern when you/if you put it out there. It’s darling.

  27. 30 Cathy January 9, 2008 at 11:59 am

The organizer has the most important feature of all… coupon holder! And I hate dividers… even though they are very useful. I’d rather glue two bags together than make a divider. I’m not sure where the resentment for dividers come from exactly, haha!

  28. 31 Rebecca January 9, 2008 at 8:27 pm

Love it! It’s one of my goals this year to better organize my car, so I’ll keep this project in the back of my mind. My brain is confounded as to how to attach the divider though?

  29. 32 debbie January 10, 2008 at 5:50 am

What a fantastic idea. I have 4 kids and the amount of junk you can collect in the car is amazing. Are you going to do a pattern for it? I would really find it useful, was it difficult?

  30. 33 macati January 10, 2008 at 7:27 am

this is exactly what I need for my car! my boyfriend once told me that no one would ever try to steal my car just for the work to select what was worth stealing…

  31. 34 Ravenhill January 10, 2008 at 9:44 am

Smart and oh so handy looking!

  32. 35 Wendi January 10, 2008 at 12:56 pm

Now that’s a fine idea! Exactly what my car needs!

  33. 36 Wendi January 10, 2008 at 12:56 pm

PS, want me to test the pattern for you;-)

  34. 37 cindy January 10, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Isn’t it amazing all the junk you haul, acquire and just pops out of nowhere when you have kids in cars?? That bag turned out very cute. Cute and Functional…it doesn’t get much better than that!

  35. 38 Kim January 10, 2008 at 4:06 pm

You’re GENIUS! Yes you are! I’m hoping you’ll be selling these little organizational dreams.

  36. 39 Tiff @ Three Peas in a Pod January 10, 2008 at 4:09 pm

I love it! Such a far cry from my walmart bag tied up to the door! LOL

  37. 40 amandajean January 10, 2008 at 10:14 pm

fantastic! I just finished cleaning out my van and that is exactly what I need!!! nice job. I think the best part is the little pocket to hold your joann’s and michael’s coupons….very very important. 🙂

  38. 41 Fiona (Dragonfly-Crafts) January 11, 2008 at 4:35 am

What a great idea. Wish I had the room in my car for something like that. Maybe a smaller version.

  39. 42 Weirdbunny January 11, 2008 at 7:25 am

THat bag fits perfectly and it looks very strong. Another masterpeice Linda ~ love Julia x

  40. 43 thedomesticdiva January 11, 2008 at 9:46 am

Love it, Linda! You’re such a creative gal!

    With friendship,

  41. 44 Tina C January 11, 2008 at 12:24 pm

That’s awesome! I’m standing in line for the pattern too!

  42. 45 Melanie January 11, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Yep, I think everyone here agrees. It is wonderful! I like the coupon spot. I think that I’d have to have a trash area about 10 times as large…we seem to have lots and lots of trash. It baffles my husband, and honestly I don’t know where half of it comes from either. My car has a little klenex holder, but I could use the other side to hold wipes and diapers. great great great!

  43. 47 Emily January 13, 2008 at 12:09 am

Oh! I could totally make this! What if you made it with tablecloth material so it could be wiped down?

    Thanks for the great idea!

    PS-check out my new blog-

    You are such an inspiration!

  44. 48 rebecca January 14, 2008 at 11:24 am

  47. 51 Heather January 17, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I must have one of these! Please oh please post a pattern. That middle divider has my brain befuzzled.

  48. 52 urbanupdater January 18, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Wow! you made that? Its very impressive. I love that the colors are all the same but the pattern is different. Is there a tutorial that you can post?

  49. 53 glitznvixen January 20, 2008 at 10:10 am

    Great job! I love it!

  50. 55 Shannon January 22, 2008 at 11:45 am

I totally need that organizer. Very clever!

  52. 57 Jenny February 19, 2008 at 4:16 pm

I totally love this idea! Even for mommy-chauffers who DON’T drive minivans, I’d still put this in my front passenger side. Great idea, and cute, too! Can’t wait to see more of this….Jenny

  53. 58 Clothmatters May 23, 2008 at 7:48 pm

    Beautifully constructed bag!

  54. 59 Denise from Ark October 2, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Hey great idea and now, with everyone keeping bottles of hand sanitzer and antibacterial wipes in the car, even more useful!

  55. 60 sewsassy1 October 7, 2013 at 9:30 pm

You did a wonderful job. I happened to follow this link because someone posted for someone that was ISO a car organizer. I need to make one, the basket I have is too rigid.
