Happy 2011 !
The last few weeks of 2010 were a continuous blur in my mind. I know we celebrated Christmas and had 2 birthdays (mine included), but other than eating a TON of food, I’m not sure what else we’ve done.
Moving to a new house has been good for us. We are appreciating the blessing of having extra space while being surrounded by less junk (hooray for the ease of donating to the thrift store!). The good news is the sewing room is organized!
The bad news is I’m scared to start sewing in there because I don’t want to get it messy.
I discovered I had WAY too many frames. So I put my old SEW letters in the attic and came up with this:
Ikea shelves are great for fabric storage.
Our old changing table holds bolts of fabric and pattern packaging has it’s own corner.
On top of the changing table is part of my collection of books and mooks.
And my first woodworking project holds a bunch of miscellaneous items.
I learned so much making this little work bench. It’s about 10 years old now. Great Grampa (my husband’s grandfather) made sure I knew that real cabinet makers use screws, not nails. 🙂 I’ll do it differently next time, even though I love how the nails look.
And finally, a little bit of wall storage…
The biggest difference between this room and the room in our old house, besides the increase in space, is that this room has no closet. No place for me to hide things. This is definitely a good thing. While my storage shelving may not be the most beautiful, it’s open and open means that I won’t accumulate a bunch of stuff that I’ll forget I have and then never use.

I love your new sewing space, it looks awesome !! I agree that having hidden storage is bad. Now get in there and use it !!
I think my favourite HAS TO BE the last picture. I’ll never have a room with that much space in to do any kind of craft, but I can aim at something as gorgeous at that little wall unit.
I love that little cabinet, too. Not sure why. I don’t use the chalk board at all – just like how it looks. 🙂
Ooohhhh! It’s fantastic! I really like the bench you made. We moved a couple of years ago and the purge felt so good.
I used to think we’d never move again, but the purging really is good. It’s amazing how much stuff one family can accumulate.

Here’s my advice: Clear EVERYTHING out of the room (minus the furniture) and only put back in what you want. Everything else can go to the thrift store. Hahaha. Aren’t I helpful?

What a nice new space! I bet it feels great to have it oraganized and read to go. Also, I appreciated your post about not being a slave to your things….I’m sure the purging was difficult but so freeing! A good reminder for all of us!
Hooray for accomplishing the task! I am itching to get my own little workspace setup (also add the rest of our residence setup to that list too). I just got my first sewing machine this past Christmas and have no clue where to start or what a certain thingamabob does. If it were my husband’s uncle, he would say to use wood screws if you manage to need any at all. He’s an insanely good woodworker!

What a nice space you have made. Open shelving is such a good idea for a workspace. My problem is fear of actually cutting the material once I have it. Aack. I need a sewing buddy. Have a fantastic year.
Goodness, I know that feeling. And I also have had to toss out good fabric that fell victim to my design mistakes. But, then I realized that I wouldn’t enjoy working with ugly fabric. Working with good fabric makes me a more careful sewer. A sewing buddy would be nice, wouldn’t it? I was sewing yesterday while my son was working on his own art project at the sewing table. It was nice to have him there. Not exactly a sewing buddy, but nice company.
Congrats on your new place! You really do have a grand new studio with lots of SPACE! I have a bedroom, but I have to share it with a spare bed. You are really organized, it would probably been a good thing for all of us to not have a closet to hide items!!
Angie, I feel SO blessed to have the space. Having a room is nice, and your spare bed is a nice place to lay out projects, as I’m sure you know. I thought at first that the closet was a good thing. It wasn’t until we moved that I realized that for me it was very bad.

ooh, lucky you! My kids don’t realise that the moment one of them leaves home I will be taking over their room and having my own sewing space. I keep collecting things for my future craft room, despite it being a good 11 or so years away…
