Ever since we got the birthday invite, I’ve been obsessing about how to put this present together.
Next time I’ll center the initial better so that the button looks more like a period. And, I’ll make the crayon pockets wider so it doesn’t pucker so much. Here’s the inside – Twistables and a drawing pad:
And the back:
I had SO much fun figuring this out, almost as fun as making my first purse! So help me out – what is this thing called? A drawing case?
And now I want to make more – I’m feeling myself slipping into Christmas present mode which means that all other projects fall to the bottom of the list. Oh no . . . . I’m slipping . . . . slipping . . . . help!
Thanks to Kimberly for teaching me how to make a cord out of yarn and Karyn for telling me about fabric-covered buttons. Thanks go here for the circle inspiration. And to Ashley who’s pictures of her dpn case inspired me to make a similar project for crayons. Would I have any inspiration by myself? I think not. You blogging ladies (all of you!) stretch my brain and force me to be creative. Thank you!
The Little Artist Drawing Case pattern is available here.
EXCELLENT!!! I love it! You’ll have to tell me what you did…my neice is an avid artista. I would call it a drawing case, or a sketch pad cover..or art on the go!
😀
that turned out great! i love the M font. did you cover the button on the front with fabric?
gorgeous – that will be a big hit.
(i know, Christmas is sneaking up on me, too!)
wow, nicely done! I think for a child gift a “drawing case” or “art case” is perfect. Put in some grown up watercolor pencils and a sketchpad and it becomes a “sketch portfolio”. but whatever you call it, I like it!
I love this gift! She is definitely going to love this present!
I did a double take, for I thought that you meant my Maddy……but her b-day isn’t for a while, and haven’t sent any invites, but that is the kind of gift right up her ally!!!! That is such a sweet and thoughtful present that I can’t imagine anyone of any age not just adoring it! I absolutely LOVE the colors, and is that a polymer button I see………
Love the drawing case! The dotted fabric is adorable.
You do such nice work, Linda!!!!
You’ve just got to do a tutorial on this! Please?
Linda! I love everything about this especially the stitched circles and monogram! Great job!
Wow…that is awesome! I sure wish I had one of those when I was little. The recipient will LOVE this!
M for Monica? :o) That is one lucky M kiddie who’s going to get that. It’s beautiful Linda!
it looks awesome! i tried making a pencil roll, but it was a disaster!
Awwww, love that. Great design all the way around. Very clever with the circles and her initial is so important! to a little one.
Another idea of yours I’ll keep on the back burner.
I love that! I have an M who loves to draw! I went to Kimberly’s blog looking for the instructions on how to make cord out of yarn, but I couldn’t find them. Can you help me find them? Or maybe you could do a tutorial?
I saw a terrific bag at the Houston Quilt show last weekend that made me think of you. It was a little tote bag and on the outside were individual pockets for crayons. Perfect for taking to church or a restaurant to keep kids quiet & occupied. Makes me wish I knew some little kids to sew some for.
Adorable drawing case! My daughters b-day is two weeks away and I may have to make one of these for her–she loves to draw and do crafts.
PLEASE don’t remind me that Christmas is just around the corner–i feel so behind! 😉
Oh, that is darling. I’m glad my case was inspirational–but honestly you took a pretty basic idea on my part and turned it into something totally imaginative and wonderful. What a great gift–I’d have loved to get that as a kid!
That is so cute, a wonderful birthday present.
Okay, now I can’t go to Maddie’s party, your gift is waaaay cuter than whatever I can get. You’ll have to explain to Maddie why her friend “Gosh” couldn’t be there for me okay? 🙂 I predict Maddie will have that at church doodling one day soon.
That is sooooooooooooooo sooooooooooo cute!!! I just love it. If we get Miss V. I will have to get one of those for her!
I love your creativity!
Linda, that came out so cute! I need to make a cover for a sketchbook gift, so I might be giving you a shout for help. As for the name, I’ve been trying to twist the phrase “artist on the go” into something catchy. Maybe you’ll have better luck. :0)
I love it! That is a great gift idea!
It’s very cute.
p.s. You forgot to thank me!!!!
Oh I love it!! Isn’t that what blogging is all about-gathering ideas from other blogger’s creations to create something of your own? Perfect!!! Big hugs!!
Oh and your could call it a travel art case. I love art on the go that someone else said.
What a lovely gift! Very sweet and very nice! Lovely!
Wow this is clever! How did you get the paper pad to stick in?
I’ve been thinking about making something like this for Christmas gifts…and I absolutely LOVE the way you made the cover! She’ll love it!
ooh…ahh… I love it when you come up with new creations. This one is great! “M” is a lucky little artist!
oh wow. that is awesome!
Love it! I want to make one for my daughter. Shoot, I want to make one for me!
I LOVE this!!!! I made my daughter a pencil roll for her art pencils but she would absolutely flip for this. I MUST make one for her for Christmas. You wouldn’t be willing to do a tutorial would ya?
Wow, this is too cute — nice job!
I have to tell all you gals that the pictures just didn’t do justice to the gift. And, yes, Maddie does love it. Even though it wasn’t Dora, she spent a lot of time with it today. She understands getting the crayons in and out of their spots, and had to try all the colors. (She hasn’t had crayons like this before.) And, of course, she didn’t care where that M was located on the front! It was there!
I’m one happy Nana who will get to enjoy Maddie enjoying this present, and we can take it on the airplane to go say goodbye to her Grandma (who is her great-grandma, actually). Thanks!
Am I too old for a drawing case like this one? I love it!!!
Thank you for this great present! I only opened this and one other present all afternoon – it was so much fun to color. Then I got to bring it to church and share it with three other kids. And my Mom let me take it to Starbucks last night too! I’m going on a trip this week and get to bring it along. My Mom says I’ll need more paper by then. And she also says my Dad needs to stop drawing in it. 🙂
Thanks again…. hey everybody, it’s the greatest present!
ooooh yes you must post a tutorial for this. i have a 13 yr that loves to draw that would love this. oh i am just picturing making so many of these!!! please say you will do a tute!!!
